Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was born at Delhi in the year 1817 AD.He was the son of Meer Muttaqi Khan who belonged to a distinguished family.Sir Syed had to face many hardships in life as he lost his father at an early age.Due to his weak financial position he was forced  to join government service as Serishtadar .Later he rose to the rank of Sub-judge.In leisure hours he used to serve his country a nd the nation through his writings.

The political life of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan began after 1857,when he saw that the Muslims were the main fighters in the war of Independence and the British were adopting a revengeful attitude towards them. The Hindus had also participated in the war of Independence but they had organised themselves very cleverly. They had lost nothing.
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was shocked at the destruction of the Muslim families of Delhi,Moradabad etc. Some of the members of family lost their lives in the struggle. He felt the dangerous position of the Muslims. So he adopted a compromising policy from the beginning. He wrote many articles about the services of the Muslims to the British government.
Syed Ahmed Khan was the first Muslim to feel that Hindus and Muslims were two separate nation and unity among them was not possible. He asked the Muslims not to take part in the activities of the Indian National Congress which was a party of Hindus. He further hardened his attitude after the Hindu-Muslim riot Bombay in 1883.
The greatest service to the Muslims
by Syed Ahmed Khan was in the field of education. He had realised long before that the Muslims had not acquired modern education and so they were backward. He tried to change the Muslim mode of thinking in to modern one. With this aim he started the Aligarh movement which resulted into Aligarh university. In order to introduce English education Sir Syed Ahmed Khan opened schools and organized a "Society for Education progress pf Indian Muslims" This society decided to establish the  Mohammandan Anglo-oriental college at Aligarh.Soon the college became Muslim university Aligarh which became a centre of the cultural activities of the Muslims.Within a few years the Muslims were able to overcome much of their education backwardness. The Aligarh Muslim university produced such leaders as played an important part in the intellectual and political awakening of the Muslims of South Asia.
Some of the leaders of the Aligarh movement founded the all India Muslim league in 1906.The Muslim youths educated in Aligarh university worked for this political party. It was the same Muslim league which achieved Pakistan. It can rightly be said that Aligarh movement laid the foundation stone of Pakistan. The Muslimq of South Asia should be thankful to Aligarh.
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan died on 26th March,1898 at Aligarh. He lies buried in the compound of Aligarh Muslim university. He was the man who awakened the frustrated Muslims of South Asia and led them for about fifty years towards a bright future.
