The United Nations is a world organization.Most of the nation of the world are members of this organization.This organization was started officilly on 24th October,1945.That was shortly after the second world war.This war had caused a lot of destruction and brought a lot of misery to the world.The most powerful nations of the world felt that there should be a way to prevent such world wars.For this purpose they met to discuss ways and means to work for world peace.The result was the setting up of the United Nations Organization.

The Constitution of the United Nations Organization is found.In what is called the U.N.character.The main aim of the United Nations is to keep peace in the world.The nation that are members
must agree to work for peace.Disputes and quarrels among nation must be settled in a peaceful way in the United Nations.If a nation starts a war,the United Nations must try and stop it as soon as possible. The best way to stop quarrels is to develop friendship amongst nations.

When a nation wants to become member it sends an application to the security council.This Council recommends the member of the General Assembly.

The Security Council is mainly responsible for peace and security in the world.Five members are permanent.These are England,France,the United States,Russia and China.The other six are elected by the General Assembly for two years.The Security Council can only take action when seven of the members,including the the five permanent ones,say'yes'.

The Security Council can ask the nations to settle the disputes peacefully.If fighting has started the council can call for a crease-fire.If a nation does not listen,the Council may order other nations to cut trade and communications with that nation.

This Council controls a set of organization meant to help the poor,the sick and those who cannot read or write.It consists to eighteen member nation.These members are elected by the General Assembly for three years.There are various communications which work on different subjects such as trade among nations,the equality of women,the population of the world and money matters.It also sees that human rights are guaranteed by all nations.

This court judges disputes to it by nations.The nations must agree to abide by the decision of the court.It also advises nations on matters of international law.This court is made up of fifteen judges appointed from different countries.These judges serve for nine years.The cases are settled by decision of the majority of the judges present.At least nine of them must be present.This court has its residence in Hague city of Holland.

There are about four thousand persons who work in the secretariat of the United Nations.These person are appointed from many countries.Most of them work in the head quarters of the United Nations in New York.Others live in various parts of the world where they are needed by their work.

At the head of this secretariat there is a Secretary-General.His work is very important.It is his duty to bring before the United Nations any matter which threatens peace and security in the world.He also has to report on the work of the United Nations all over the world.
